Basel’s hosting of the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest is facing uncertainty due to an upcoming public referendum. On November 24, voters in Basel will decide whether to uphold the Cantonal Grand Council’s funding approval of approximately 37.46 million CHF. Although Basel has made significant strides toward hosting Eurovision—including the council’s overwhelming approval of the budget—this referendum could overturn their decision. If successful, the referendum would halt Basel’s financial support for the contest, which could force organizers to consider moving the event.
The referendum, driven by the conservative Federal Democratic Union (EDU), has raised concerns over both the costs and cultural impact of the event. Citing financial strain and religious objections, EDU members argue that Eurovision might not align with local priorities and values. Nonetheless, Basel’s officials, including Cantonal President Conradin Cramer, emphasize the economic and cultural benefits that hosting Eurovision could bring, as well as the city’s commitment to sustainability, which they hope will appeal to voters in the lead-up to the referendum.
The referendum is unlikely to succeed however, it does create an additional headache for the competition organisers.
If Basel’s residents vote to retain funding, the city will proceed as host for Eurovision’s 69th edition, scheduled for May 13, 15, and 17, 2025.
